The Rumors Of Our Demise Have Been Greatly Exaggerated

Game On

-By The Reluctant Republican

NYT2009012012141335C Here we are. They day after. Any way you slice it, Barack Obama made history yesterday; not only in becoming our first, non-white President, but by doing so in a landslide victory with overwhelming popular support. Now what? Game on. That’s what.

When the pomp and circumstance fades in the coming weeks and the direction of the administration begins to take shape, the historic nature of Obama’s Presidency will not change any of his campaign promises, stated policy positions, or ensuing political appointments. The fact that candidate Obama pledged to make the Freedom of Choice Act (which would eliminate all common sense abortion laws nationwide) the first legislation he signed into law as President will not have changed. The fact that Obama intends to make Eric Holder his Attorney General (a man who, among other things, has a long history of being staunchly against the 2nd amendment) will not have changed. The fact that Obama appointed Rahm Emanuel (who has a strong record of being pro abortion and anti-gun) as his chief of staff will not have changed. The list goes on, but you get my point. Make no mistake, the agenda laid out by candidate Obama, and the staff assembled by President Elect Obama (with a few notable exceptions) are among the most liberal we’ve seen since F.D.R. It is imperative that we as a people do not allow the direction of our country to turn sharply to the left. (I mean, what could possibly be more liberal or more insane than the notion that we’ll spend our way out of the recession? With what money, exactly, might I ask? But I digress..)

A friend of mine recently made the case to me that all Presidents “moderate” after getting elected, and that he expected Obama to do the same. For a myriad of reasons, I hope he is correct. Either way, I am just as happy as anyone that as a nation we crossed a threshold yesterday that didn’t seem possible even a few years ago. For me though, as a conservative American concerned for the future of our country, the fact that President Obama has made history with his election does not grant him any sort of free pass on his liberal agenda. It isn’t some sort of pixie dust that magically makes his proposed policies any easier to swallow.

So I say, “Welcome to the White House, Mr. president, and thank you for taking our nation past that line in the sand. Now…game on.”
