Obama’s Abortion Dance -By The Reluctant Republican
In last night’s debate Obama kept to his script of masking his pro-abortion views by dodging the issue and instead talking about the politically correct and “unifying message” of reducing the number of abortions. I, for one, am getting sick of this obfuscation of the truth about who Obama is and what he believes about the human rights of the unborn. Take a look at the clip below from a speech Obama delivered to Planned Parenthood last year. At 1:37 into the clip he promises to make his first action as president to sign the “Freedom of Choice Act” (a promise he repeats on his own web site along with boasting that he’s received a 100% pro-choice rating from Planned Parenthood and NARAL Pro-Choice America).
So what is the “Freedom of Choice Act”? It is a bill first introduced by the democrats in the House of Representatives in 2004 in response to President Bush signing the Partial-Birth Abortion Ban into law in 2003. The Supreme Court later upheld the ban in 2007.
The purpose and goal of the bill is to abolish all restrictions and limitations on the right of women in the United States to have an abortion, whether at the State or Federal level.
This means that any and all State or local laws regarding the issue of abortion, including parental notification laws for minors, spousal consent, waiting periods, and bans on taxpayer funded abortions would be stripped away. Some sources, including Lifenews.com, have estimated that the removal of these State and local laws (legally voted on and passed by local residents) could increase the number of abortions by as much as 125,000 per year (see their release here).
To borrow an Obama phrase, let me be clear. Not only has Obama promised a special interest group (Planned Parenthood) at a fund raiser that he would deliver a law they desperately want, but he has also co-sponsored the Senate version of the bill. This isn’t just about Supreme Court Justice nominations. And you cannot simply say that you believe abortion is a State’s rights issue because Obama has pledged to make it a Federal issue as his first act as President. (See National Right to Life’s fact sheet on Obama’s abortion record here).
Obama can eloquently deliver a speech and hit well crafted talking points about his desire to “reduce the number of abortions”, but let there be no room for doubt, he is at his core, an avowed pro-abortion anti-life liberal.
